Changes Schmanges
0 Comments Published by Dave March 5th, 2008 in Animation, Animation Mentor, Blog, ProductionSo first up, here’s a repost of my documentary Level Up I posted a while ago.
Level Up from Dave Logan on Vimeo.
Why the repost? Vimeo kicks Youtube to the curb. Better resolution and better features, it’s not even close. So while I will continue to post to Youtube for the audience size, my “real” posts will be to Vimeo.
Seriously, go check it out.
Other changes: over the summer I’m going to redesign this website; portfolio, blog and all. It probably won’t be an exclusively Flash design. And it might be at a new domain. I’ve always hated that little hyphen in my URL, taunting me with its … its … hyphen-ness. Which is hyphenated. SHIT.
Finally, I’m looking into turning this blog into more of a tumblog. I love everything about Tumblr except its aversion to comments and categories, which I kinda need. So I’m going to see what I can hack together.
P.S: My final short film for Animation Mentor is in layout. In 5 months or so I should have a pretty sweet lil animation to post.
To Vimeo, of course.
Quick walk cycle I did of a bored / defeated character.
Getting There…

That’s me. That’s my new guitar. That’s the beach of the best lake on the earth. Is there a better way to start a blog post? Puuuhhhhh, nope!
So, first thing’s first, it’s my birthday. And it’s the last big one, the only one that really matters beyond 16 and 18. The world is my alcohol-drenched oyster. I’m like a kid in a liquor store. I mean candy store. I mean liquor store. Haw haw haw.
What the hell am I doing on my blog on my 21st birthday you ask? Actually this post has been for the most part written for a couple weeks or so. Except this sentence, of course. And this. This part I copied and pasted from a better blog. This is new again.
I’ve had a few, come on, I’m twenty fucking one!
Anyway, I was prompted to actually get this post up because 1. I got an assignment done for Animation Mentor that I know you all are dying to see, and 2. I found the most delightful reference for the title of the post.
It comes from a band I found about a day or two ago, Fake Problems. If you liked Against Me! more for their folksy sing-alongs and less for their new wave (haw haw haw), you should check out Fake Problems. Folk punk may just be the newest strand in trendy alt rock, but damnit it’s a helluva thread. I mean, check out this cover art:

Yeehaw!
Anyway, Animation Mentor is going great. I just got back from a three month break I took to enjoy my summer in DC to its greatest extent. I regret nothing.
I was a bit worried coming back. It’s been at least two months since I’ve even touched Maya. A lot of my classmates are really good animators, to boot. But I think I did alright this week. We took a shot from last term and started working on facial animation (emotions, blinks, lip sync, etc). It needs lots of work - the overall animation, a few parts of lip sync in particular, and there’s a big glitch when he leans back in his chair due to Maya being dumb - but it’s getting there.

The audio is from Dr. Strangelove.
Man, this is a link heavy post. I like it.
Remember that book I told you about a while back? The one I allegedly wrote a chapter in? PROOF!

It’s supremely exciting, and I thank Chris for letting me contribute. Go pick up a copy and get us a 2nd pressing!
Finally, I was flipping through my sketchbook and found this. I like it, thought maybe you would too. Excuse the shitty cell phone cam.

Just a couple sketches I made recently:

This one I made after visiting the Hirshhorn:
